ROOT CANAL TREATMENT.
A root canal is the removal of a nerve from the tooth. Each tooth has at least one nerve that runs through the tooth and connect to the gum. The nerve is the life source of the tooth. If the nerve becomes infected or exposed (due to decay or structural damage), it can be very painful. A root canal removes the nerve and fills the nerve cavity with composite material. While the removal of the nerve relieves the patient of pain, it also removes the life source of the tooth. A tooth that has a root canal done on it almost always needs a crown to be places as well to reinforce the strength of the tooth.
Along with easing your discomfort, root canal therapy has several important functions. First, the procedure can save the healthy part of your tooth. Without treatment, the bacteria would continue to multiply, and you might eventually require an extraction. In many instances, the bacteria could also spread to your nearby teeth and gum tissue. In severe cases, you could even develop a serious jawbone infection. In addition to preventing these oral-systemic problems, endodontic treatment can restore the appearance of your smile. Infected teeth often develop internal discoloration, which is immune to whitening treatment. With our custom-fabricated crowns, we can renew your healthy, bright smile.
Tooth infections can cause a number of symptoms. If you suffer from any of the following concerns, you may require endodontic treatment:
-Sensitivity to heat or cold
-Pain when biting down
-Chronic bad breath
-A persistent sore on one part of your gums
-A single discolored tooth
If you suspect that your tooth is severely infected, it is important to call our office as soon as possible. Delaying your treatment could compromise your other teeth and your overall oral wellness.
